SOIL-DYEING

Our dyes are derived from natural minerals that are safe for humans and the environment. These natural dyes, which return to the earth, are commonly used for dyeing natural fibers due to their non-toxic properties.
Additionally, they require only a small amount of water and no fire during the dyeing process, making them an eco-friendly and sustainable option. Since the dyes are composed of biodegradable ingredients, wastewater from the dyeing process poses no environmental concerns.
Bengara (iron oxide), a natural soil pigment, is highly resistant to ultraviolet rays, preventing fading from sunlight and protecting fibers from deterioration and discoloration.
Bengara dye also possesses excellent properties such as water resistance, heat resistance, lightfastness, alkali resistance, acid resistance, insect resistance, mold resistance, and UV protection—making it a truly functional and durable natural dye.
Enjoy the unique colors that only earth-derived dyes can create.

BENGAL SOIL/ SOIL- DYEING

Bengara is primarily composed of ferric oxide (Fe₂O₃), which forms when iron in soil and minerals oxidizes—it is essentially iron rust. It is known as the oldest red pigment used by humankind.
The name "Bengala" originates from the Bengal region of India, from where iron oxide was introduced to Japan. It is believed to have arrived in Okinawa during the Edo period via China and the Korean Peninsula.
Globally, Bengara was used in cave paintings in France and Spain approximately 17,000 years ago. In Japan, it has long been utilized in pottery and lacquerware. Due to its rich color and protective properties, it became an essential element in traditional Japanese wooden architecture, safeguarding structures from harsh weather conditions.

At IROS DYEING, we carefully dye each product using these earth-derived pigments. Our goal is to bring these traditional techniques into everyday life and preserve their cultural significance.
We also offer workshops where you can revive forgotten garments from your closet through the art of natural dyeing. If you are interested.
